Da Vinci Code
Just seems like Im the only one who hasnt put in her two cents about the Davinci code yet....so...here it is.
Just watched the movie tonight. I had read the book last year...and i found it to be a piece of badly written tripe. The ideas werent original, the story was two dimensional IMO and the writing skills poor. Not that my writing ability is great lol...but Im not pretending to write a novel. I had seen Brown in interviews and I didnt like him there either so the overall impression that i had for everything "Davinci" was less than favorable.
Well. The movie, imo is very different. I really liked what Ron Howard did with it. I did like the casting although many people didnt. I found the ideas were illustrated well and presented well without being too cheesy. I found the dialogue more natural and i thought that the ending had the finesse and eloquence that the book lacked imo. It was all tied up well at the end i thought....not so in the book.
And.
I have to say...in further musing.....one thing that Dan Brown did that Baigent et. al missed the mark on with The Holy Blood and The Holy Grail (HBHG)...is that he brought the ideas/concepts/theories to the mass populace in a way that they never did with their book. Mind you, the focus on both books was vastly different. Brown dealt with an overview of the theory but tended to focus on the feminine and the Magdalen; whereas, Baigent et. al focused more on the priory and a detailed support for the theory itself....and much of the focus was on Rennes Le Chateau and the surrounding mystery there. Brown didnt even touch upon the Rennes mystery other than to name the Grand Master "Sauniere".
Plus, Davinci code was light cottage industry reading and plainly is only a work of fiction, despite Browns assertions to the contrary regarding the organizations represented. HBHG reads like a dry history text. It is fascinating....but not to be considered if you arent prepared to focus closely on the details....thats pretty much what the book is bursting with, details. Fascinating, delicious details guaranteed to make you wonder IMO.
Both books, IMO, are a must for anyone interested in delving into this topic in more detail.
Overall...the movie got 2 thumbs up from me. The book....well...it was lacking i thought.
